How Southshore Hat came about

Southshore Knitted Hat Pattern is Knit So Easy’s quickest and easiest hat to knit.  Previously, I used Patterson pattern for all my charity knitting.  I still knit Patterson often.  But, completely by accident, I created Southshore and it is as easy, if not easier than the Patterson hat.

I took a hat on the needles to the doctor’s office with me.  I stuffed it in my purse at the last minute and didn’t have one of my little “knit kits” with me.  So I had no way to measure.  Turns out my wait at the doctor’s took much longer than I anticipated. I thought I had about enough ribbing done and started on the main part of the hat.  Later I finished the hat, took all my measurements, wrote a new pattern and Southshore hat was born!

Southshore is Knit So Easy’s quickest and easiest hat pattern.

Here are a few reasons Southshore is so quick & easy:

  1.  Uses only knit and purl stitches.
  2. Only two stitches make up this pattern – 2 x 2 ribbing and stockinette
  3. Knitted flat and then seamed.
  4. Uses short, straight needles
  5. 1 1/2 inches of ribbing (K2, P2 – Knit 2, Purl 2) to start out the hat.
  6. Then the remainder of the hat is knit one row, purl one row, (stockinette stitch.)  Still using stockinette stitch,  the last six rows decrease to form the crown of the hat.
  7. All easily noted how to do in the simple-to-follow pattern.

Need to knit a bunch of hats?

Southshore’s ribbing makes hats fit snugly, but still loose enough to accommodate a good size range.  Great when knitting a batch of hats for festivals or for charities when you can’t measure the persons receiving the hats.

Southshore uses a small amount of worsted weight yarn and short, straight needles so it is an economical pattern to use for making hats in bulk.  Whether using acrylic yarn, wool & wool blends, cottons & cotton blends, or alpaca, it knits up a great looking hat.

Southshore is easily knitted, then seamed in batches for charity projects or makers needing a large batch for festivals, Etsy stores or to sell online.

 Time Saving Tip!

If your group wants make a batch for charity, even non-knitters can participate by sewing the seams, making pom poms, etc.  Get a real assembly line going!

Hats are a great project for taking along.  This pattern is simple enough to work on while at appointments, watching media, chatting with others and in meetings.  It is one of those projects that can easily be put down and then pick up right where you left off.  A must for a portable knit!

Never knit a hat before?  No problem!

The Southshore Child’s hat is a great hat for a complete beginner.

Knit So Easy patterns have a place right on the pattern to mark your row.  No worries about getting lost!

As with all Knit So Easy knitted hat patterns, the Southshore hat is knitted flat, then seamed.   That means using short, straight needles.  So much easier than trying to knit in the round. There will be plenty of time to learn how to use circular needles and knit in the round later.

But for a beginner knitter, you CAN knit a hat as long as you know how to cast on, knit, purl and sew a seam!

You can find the Southshore Child Hat knitting pattern in the Knit So Easy Etsy store.
